It’s been a long time coming but a street reconstruction project will finally go ahead in Owen Sound next year.
Director of Engineering Services Chris Webb says 3rd Avenue West and 3rd Avenue A West at 8th Street West are going to get a major overhaul.
The stretch of 8th Street West linking the two avenues will also be dug up and reconstructed.
Webb says both avenues are dead-ends with many older homes.
He says the pipes underground are very old and need to be replaced with PVC.
Webb says new watermains and sanitary and stormwater pipes will be installed to help alleviate flooding in the neighbourhood, located at the bottom of the escarpment.
Once the new underground services are in, a new roadway with new sidewalks will be constructed.
Webb says the project has been at the top of the city’s priority list for a while, but it has been too big and costly to tackle.
He says the 1.34 million dollar cost will be paid for by the recent infrastructure money announced for the city by the province.
The work is expected to begin in the spring, and Webb says they expect to finish it in one construction season.
Webb says area residents will be invited to a public meeting to have a look at the plans and discuss any concerns they may have.
