There are going to be some rough spots on the Saugeen Shores Rail Trail over the next couple of weeks.
Crews from Bell Aliant will be installing underground fibre-optic cable along the route.
The good news is that Bell will repair any damage to the trail and are providing a one-time donation of over 67 thousand dollars for future trail improvements.
Regional Implementation Manager Larry McFadden says they’re installing the cable to serve Bruce Power, Bell Aliant’s largest customer in Ontario.
McFadden says using the Rail Trail route also allows them to bypass most of Port Elgin, meaning less disruption to roads and traffic.
He says it will take ten days to install the cable along the trail, and it would have taken two months on the route through town.
McFadden says they will make sure the safety of people who use the trail isn’t affected and any damage will be repaired.
He says most of that work will be done in the spring, and they are working closely with town staff to make sure it all gets done properly.
McFadden hopes work to install the cable can begin in the next ten days.
