More changes are on the way for how garbage is collected in Saugeen Shores.
The amount of garbage going to the landfill site has gone down by over 735 thousand pounds since the bag-tag program started in June.
The town is now planning to start a flourescent light bulb and styrofoam recycling program in 2009.
The materials would be collected at the recycling depot located at the landfill site.
The new programs will be funded by cancelling the three free landfill use days the municipality usually holds.
The free days this year amounted to about 25 thousand dollars in lost revenue.
Mayor Mike Smith says when the bag-tag program started, he heard many comments about the need for enhanced recycling.
Smith says nobody likes to pay extra through user fees or taxes, but the trade off is that Saugeen Shores will now have expanded recycling.
Smith expects there will be some complaints about the free landfill days being cancelled.
He understands the free days were popular because a significant amount of the town’s garbage ended up in the landfill on those days.
