Students at G.C. Huston Public School in Southampton are going to be learning about and helping clean up a lake in their community.
Grades two and six will be focusing on the condition of Fairy Lake, which is located near the school.
Teacher Enid Johnson says the school uses the lake area for many activities, including cross-country running and nature studies.
She says they’ve noticed the condition of the lake has deteriorated in the last few years so they decided to do an environmental project where students could actually see the results.
The project ties in with climate change and water conservation exhibits taking place at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre.
Johnson says she’s been encouraging students to do various small things in their own lives for the environment, like making sure taps are turned off tight.
She says the students could also influence their parents environmental habits.
Cathy McGirr of the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre is pleased with the connection the school has with the museum on the project.
She’s also pleased other partners in the community, like Meridian Credit Union, are involved.
