Mayor Ruth Lovell-Stanners announced friday that Owen Sound will be a Celebration Community for the 2010 Olympic Torch relay.
Lovell-Stanners is thrilled with the designation since Owen Sound will be one of only 187 communities across Canada to hold a celebration.
A local committee of volunteers and city staff have already begun planning for the flame’s arrival, and the evening’s entertainment.
Chair Fred Furness encourages residents to get involved and volunteer wherever they can.
The Olympic Committee will bring in a flatbed truck and lighting to showcase local talent from the community during an evening celebration.
Lovell-Stanners says it will be a great chance to show Canada, and the world what a dynamic community Owen Sound is.
There will be a farewell ceremony in the morning before the torch heads through Meaford, Thornbury, Blue Mountain, Collingwood and further east.
An Owen Sound resident will have the chance to be one of 12 thousand torch bearers in the relay.
Residents can apply online for the position, individuals that meet the requirements will be entered in a random draw.
Lovell-Stanners feels there are many deserving people in the community who should apply.
Owen Sound was given an official 2010 Vancouver Olympics flag to fly at City Hall.
Mayor Ruth Lovell-Stanners was also given an official jacket that will be worn by Celebration Community Mayors from across Canada.
The 45 thousand kilometre route will be the longest national relay in Olympic history.
