Spokesperson John Peevers says workers from Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) have removed the last of the 480 pressure tubes from the Unit 1 reactor.
Peevers says it’s complex unique work using remote-control tooling however, this latest job was finished in just two-thirds of the time it took to do the job for the first time ever, on Unit 2.
Next on the agenda is the removal of what are called the calandria tubes which contained the pressure tubes.
Peevers says both units will eventually have new calandria and pressure tubes installed.
The bulk of that work will take place next year as the company gears to have both units back on line in 2010.
Restarting Units 1 and 2 represents enough new electricity for more than a million homes.
