The Christmas season has kicked off in downtown Southampton.
Southampton Sparkles took place last evening.
40 people braved the cold wind and gathered in front of the town hall for the tree lighting ceremony.
Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce Community Relations Coordinator Sally Hunt says merchants stayed open late, encouraging people to kick start their Christmas shopping.
Hunt says everyone she spoke with said the tree looks beautiful and the caroller providing music sounded great.
Southampton Girl Guides were also carolling throughout the downtown.
Hunt is hoping the troubled economy might actually help Southampton merchants this Christmas.
Hunt is hoping people will shop locally instead of making trips to the US or Toronto.
Hunt says there are lots of great deals to be found in Saugeen Shores.
Shoppers in Southampton and Port Elgin have a chance to win gift certificates and Chamber of Commerce dollars if they shop locally this Christmas.
63 businesses are taking part in the Shop, Dine, and Win Passport Promotion
