The debate over some cottages on leased township land in Huron-Kinloss is heating up.
Huron-Kinloss council does not want to renew the leases for the cottage lots on Poplar Beach when they expire in September 2010.
Mayor Mitch Twolan says the former Huron Township council decided to allow the cottages to be built on municipal land on a lease-to-lease basis.
One of the cottage owners has asked their MPP to step in.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch has sent a letter to the township in support of renewing the leases.
The letter asks for a response to both the cottage owner and Murdoch’s office.
Huron-Kinloss has also received a letter from residents telling council to go ahead and let the leases expire.
The residents are concerned about the environmental impact of the cottages located on the leased land.
Twolan understands those concerns. He says Huron-Kinloss takes environmental stewardship seriously.
Twolan says the township is waiting to hear back from its lawyer for direction on the situation.
