A saggy economy is not stopping the Owen Sound from getting fit.
CEO of the Y, Gayle Graham is pushing ahead with a feasibility study on a proposed regional fitness centre.
It’s a seventeen million dollar plan that would include a walking track, a swimming pool, a warm water pool, group fitness facilities with programs for seniors and a few ice sheets.
It’s designed to serve not only Owen Sound but surrounding communities like Meaford and Georgian Bluffs.
Graham has made presentations to local councils and received positive feedback so far.
She says the feasibility study will look at the overall cost of the structure, whether it will be big enough to handle the demand in the area communities, and what grant money is available from the Federal and provincial governments.
Once all that is determined, the Owen Sound Y CEO says they’ll know how much local fund raising is needed.
The study should be done before Christmas, and Graham says if all goes well they could have shovels in the ground by the spring of 2010.
The development would be on land next to the Colesium and it would take about 18 months to complete.
