Former Port Elgin Mayor Fredrick Wuerth has died at the age of 77.
Wuerth died Monday at Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton.
Wuerth served as mayor from 1988 until 1991.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith sat on several committees with Wuerth before amalgamation and says he always enjoyed his wit and love for the community.
Smith says Wuerth also started a competition that eventually grew into what is now Port Elgin’s famous Pumpkinfest.
Wuerth, along with friends and neighbours would try to outdo each other with who could grow the largest pumpkin.
Visitation for Fredrick Wuerth takes place from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday at the W. Kent Milroy Port Elgin Chapel. The funeral service is at 2:00pm Thursday at Port Elgin United Church.
