This year’s Worlds Aloud Festival in Durham is going to mark 5 years of great poetry in the town.
The 5th annual spoken-word festival is generally based out of the Durham Art Gallery, but this year, two satellite venues are being used as well.
Last night, the festival kicked off at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in Owen Sound with a talk by featured poet Don Mackay.
Mackey was awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2007 for his book Strike/Slip.
Tomorrow night, in Durham, Mackay will be on the mainstage with Catherine Kidd and George Elliott Clarke.
There is a workshop planned for Saturday afternoon with a Poetry Slam with the “Last Call” poets, and at the same time, there will be a presentation of Peter and the Wolf at Victoria Jubilee Hall in Walkerton.
Saturday evening, the main stage in Durham will feature Ayanna Black, Sheng Xue and David Bateman.
Another poetry slam will be held at noon in Durham on Sunday, followed by a 3 PM presentation by Molly Peacock, Nel Mcleod and Klyde Broox
Organiser Claire Fanger says when the festival began five years ago, they never dreamed of how popular the event would become.
