Spokesperson John Peevers says it has to be cleaned up before any work on in certain areas can continue.
Peevers says during the disassembly of the Unit 2 reactor, dust, and water in a few unexpected places was found.
He says cleaning out the oxide dust will mean a one hundred day delay for some aspects of the refurbishment work.
An earlier published report in the Toronto Star suggested all work has halted but that’s not the case.
Peevers says they’re using something like a super vaccuum to clean up the dust and wipe down some of the components.
He says the clean-up is being done by remote-control tools and no one has been harmed by this discovery.
The clean up won’t change the latest cost estimate.
That is because of a fixed price contract with Atomic Energy of Canada, estimated at somewhere between 3 and 3.4 billion dollars.
