Fenton, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer recently, tells Beach News his doctors say he has gone through the procedures very well and had been cleared to return to work last June.
He says a decision was made then that he would not return to work until after the final treatment.
Fenton has been with the fire department for 28 years and fire chief since 1999.
He says he had hoped to complete 30 years of service.
The 58 year old says he has no idea what he’s going to do next.
Beach News asked Fenton if he was ready to go back to work, why the retirement.
Fenton declined comment and suggested we talk to the town or the acting fire chief.
Saugeen Shores CAO Ron Brown, when contacted by us, said some restructuring is being studied within the fire department although nothing has been finalized.
There were no further details given on the restructuring.
Brown does admit they had talked about Chief Fenton’s future with the fire department and he says Fenton decided himself that retirement was probably the best thing at this stage.
Checking with acting Fire Chief Phil Eagleson, echoed the thoughts of Brown, referring to the restructuring going on within the department.
Eagleson doesn’t believe Fenton was asked to retire but then referred all further questions to town officials.
