Bruce Power President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne says they’ve filed an application with the provincial regulator to begin the environmental assessment process in Nanticoke, Ontario.
He says it’s a federally mandated step, and they’ll be open for questions from people in the region on who they are and what they plan on doing.
Hawthorne says the process usually takes around three years, but he’s hoping for a quicker turnaround this time.
He says Bruce Power and the regulators have been through the EA before and they’re hoping it will be more efficient this time around.
Hawthorne says they chose to try to expand into Nanticoke because the area has a coal plant slated for closure in 2014.
He says the location is well-prepared for development and a plant would offer about one thousand new jobs to the region.
Ontario’s government has said it wants nuclear power to generate about 50 percent of the province’s electricity in the future.
