The proposed expansion of the Hanover Walkerton landfill site is moving forward.
Brockton Council has reconsidered its first decision and will pay additional engineering costs for the environmental assessment.
Councillor Charles Reidl says without Council’s approval, the project was stalled.
Some Councillors were first opposed to spending more money on a study to look at how to treat leachate at the landfill.
But Reidl says members realized if they didn’t spend the extra 200 thousand dollars, all of their work would have been wasted.
Brockton has already spent half a million dollars on the environmental assessment.
Reidl — who is a member of the joint landfill committee — says the Ministry of Environment would have required the leachate study anyway.
Reidl feels it’s best to go the extra mile now so they can get a quick approval on the expansion from the provincial government.
The current Hanover Walkerton landfill site has left than two years left on its life.
The next step is to have a public meeting.
Reidl hopes that can be held before the end of the year once the consultants finish the leachate study.
The preferred option is to expand the current landfill site to add another 20 to 40 years of life expectancy.
