The small maple trees lining High Street in Southampton will soon be replaced.
Southampton Streetscape Committee Member Jenny Amy says many are dying or damaged and look deplorable.
She says the committee contacted Saugeen Shores about the issue, only to discover there is a tree replacement program they can utilize to fix the problem.
Amy says the town suggested putting in Bradford Pear Trees; which are ornamental pear trees that have tolerance for wind, salt and drought conditions.
She says there won’t be any problems with fruit or wasps either.
The old trees will be taken out, some saved, others not, depending on their condition.
Amy says by mid-November the new twelve foot high trees will be planted and in the spring, annuals and perennials will be planted around them.
The cost of the trees comes out of this year’s tree replacement program budget.
