The Minister of Natural Resources says the fish hatchery on the Bruce Peninsula is a model for the province.
Donna Cansfield toured the hatchery at the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Club yesterday afternoon.
Cansfield says the hatchery is naturally spring fed — which eliminates the need for pumping and reduces costs — and there are a significant number of fish.
Cansfield says she is also impressed the operation is run by volunteers.
She says the MNR has a good working relationship with the Bruce Peninsula club and it’s a model for the rest of Ontario.
The Sportsmen used the opportunity to express their concerns about the secretive fishing agreement between the MNR and First Nations.
Cansfield tells Bayshore Broadcasting News she understands their frustration — but she notes her hands are tied since the issue is before the courts.
The document still has not been made public as the courts must decide whether it should be released or not.
But Cansfield did make a commitment to talk with the local Sportsmen before the next agreement is finalized.
Cansfield feels the main issue is the fish population and she says restocking our Lakes is critical to grow recreational fishing in Ontario.
