Christmas food hampers will likely be smaller this year after the Owen Sound Salvation army fell short in it’s Thanksgiving food drive.
The goal was 28 thousand pounds of food, but Captain Colin Bain says only about 15 thousand pounds was collected in the city this year.
He blames the slowing economy and concern among residents who may be facing a job loss in the immediate future.
Bain says it’s the only drive they have in order to fill the Christmas hampers and they either have to cut back on the size of the hampers, or on the number of families they can help.
He says they’ll reduce the amount of food in each hamper.
Donations can still be made to the Salvation army, including cash thru calling 1-800- Sal-Army and indicate it is for the Owen Sound drive.
The next major fund-raising event for the Salvation army in Owen Sound is the Kettle drive, which begins at the end of November.
