Mayor Bill Goetz of the municipality of South Bruce says his community has several issues on its plate that could affect the future of the area.
Mayor Goetz says one issue could conceivably result in the loss of several hundred jobs.
The brewery in Formosa and the Gay Lee milk plant in Teeswater are major employers in the municipality.
However, South Bruce has not been able to secure funds from senior levels of government to provide sewer service to both sites.
Goetz says the lack of service could result in plant shutdowns although nothing official has been said.
Goetz does admit he’s heard rumours about just that sort of thing happening.
Goetz also says earlier this week, South Bruce held a public meeting to discuss the system of voting in the next municipal election.
Currently they’re on a ward system and he says he’s strongly in favour of going to an “at-large” voting system.
Goetz says most of those attending the meeting feel it will provide better representation that way.
And as global as the economy downtown is, it is reaching into South Bruce as well.
Goetz says because the municipality is primarily agricultural, the cost of oil and fuel is hurting the farmers.
He’s not aware of any cutbacks but he does know there will be some serious cutbacks particularly when it comes to purchasing new equipment.
