The Dairy Farmers of Ontario is satisfied that raw milk producer Michael Schmidt has been found guilty of contempt of court.
However, spokesperson Bill Mitchell says the concern remains that Schmidt is continuing to ignore the law and put the public at risk.
Mitchell says raw milk can carry e-coli and listeria and not only does it put those drinking it at risk, it can put others at risk as well because they are transmissable.
The Dairy Farmers of Ontario did not have standing at the court case this week where the Grey county farmer was convicted.
The judge has reserved his decision on sentencing with the Crown asking for a big fine and possible several months in jail.
Bill Mitchell also blasts the farmers’ “cow share” scheme as a scam, saying the law clearly states a farmer can’t take his own milk off the farm … to either sell it or even give it away.
Durham area farmer Michael Schmidt is due back in court in January to face several charges laid by the MNR and the Grey Bruce health unit.
He claims he remains optimistic that he can win this second court case.
Schmidt also claims despite having some 30 cows potentially producing some 900 dollars worth of raw milk a day, that he pays no taxes … and is quoted as saying “I am at the poverty level.”
