South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Gwen Gilbert is seeing a renewed interest in the workings of local government.
Spekaing on Soundingboard as part of the Local Government Week series Gilbert says she’s very encouraged by the pro-active approach of the youth in the municipality.
She tells of a story where the play ship in Rotary Park in Wiarton was vandalized recently and she was heartened to see some young people step up and ask what they could do to prevent a recurrence of the act.
Gilbert says the children’s play area is being repaired.
And soon, there will be lots more for the residents of the municipality to do.
Mayor Gilbert says they’re about to hire a recreation/leisure programmer with the thought of bringing back many of the sporting and leisure activities that fell by the wayside over the years.
The mayor also indicated that although no dates have been locked in yet, there will be some public meetings set up in November to allow citizens to have their say about bag tags for garbage.
Gilbert says the municipality is looking to make garbage collection a user-pay service and taken off the general tax rolls.
She hopes the public will take advantage of the meetings to express their opinions.
