On Soundingboard Police Constable Andy Stewart of the K-9 division says he’s been working with one specific dog for a couple of weeks now and the animal is responding well.
Stewart says the new dog is named Agro, a 14 month old male German Shepherd.
It will cost about $7,000 to purchase the animal and a fundraiser has been underway for several weeks now to end tomorrow with a “Walk-a-dog-a-thon.”
Everyone is welcome to show up at the town’s leash-free dog park with dogs for a BBQ at noon on Saturday, followed by a 4-kilometre walk at 1pm.
Money pledged for the walk will be used to pay for the purchase of a new dog.
No taxpayers money will be used.
Constable Stewart says he will have Agro at the site to meet the people and a police officer from the Niagara region, who partners with the brother of Titan will be on hand for a police/canine division demonstration.
You may recall the current police dog Titan had to retire because of an injured leg that has not healed enough to put the dog back to work.
Titan will remain with Constable Stewart as a house pet.
Soundingboard host John Divinski of 98 the Beach has been inviting people to pledge he and his pet dog Ubu to do the walk as well.
John has raised enough money that he will be showing up decked out in a dress and make-up to walk the route.
Over $3,100 was raised by businesses and listeners to 98 the Beach.
