There is a new bridge opening up near Chesley.
Members of Bruce County Council and Highways staff will be at McClure’s Bridge at the North Saugeen River this afternoon at three for the grand opening.
Arran-Elderslie Mayor — and Bruce County Highways Committee Chair — Ron Oswald says the new 26-metre long, two-lane concrete bridge will have a sidewalk for pedestrians who use the trail.
He says the bridge will also serve as an alternate route for the local people if and when the bridge on Main Street in Chesley is replaced.
Oswald says farmers use McClure’s Bridge to get to mill to pick up fertilizer or feed.
He says people also use the bridge to see the scenic, picturesque side of Chesley.
Oswald says the old bridge was over 100 years old and had a steel frame.
He says there were abutments put in back in 1958.
Oswald says the new bridge costs over 700 thousand dollars with 400 thousand coming from Ontario’s Rural Infrastructure Investment Initiative.
He says rest is being cover by Bruce County who will then turn the bridge over to the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie.
