Carol Mitchell says it’s time our province was given a fair shake from Ottawa.
Speaking in the wake of the announced closure of the Volvo Motor Grader plant in Goderich, a visibly-angry Mitchell calls on whichever party forms the next government to give Ontario the same consideration as the rest of the country.
Mitchell says there are regional programs for laid-off workers across the country except in southern Ontario.
Mitchell says it’s been up to the McGuinty government to shoulder the burden of providing re-training programs for displaced manufacturing workers and that it’s time there was a national initiative administered federally.
Mitchell says there’s inequity in Employment Insurance payments to those thrown out of work in our province compared to the rest of Canada.
She says on average, a former manufacturing worker can expect 46-hundred dollars less in E-I than their counterparts elsewhere.
Mitchell says it’s unfair and that it’s time for the federal government to address the issue.
