A local man will soon be leaving to serve Canada in the military.
Local Wiarton resident, Fritz Pfahl will start his basic military training on October 6th.
19 year old Pfahl says it has been his dream to join the military ever since grade six.
He says he just wants to help other people out, especially in third world countries because they don’t have the lifestyles Canadians do.
South Bruce Peninsula Council honored Pfahl with a plaque and certificate and thanked him for his services.
Members from the Wiarton Royal Canadian Legion also thanks Pfahl for representing the country.
Pfahl will start with three months of basic training, then three months of survival training.
He will then move on to train to be a combat engineer.
He says a combat engineer builds bridges, clears minefields and destroys obstacles that are in the way of infantry and armour divisions, among other things.
Pfahl says he is nervous and excited at the same time.
He says leaving his family and girlfriend behind won’t be easy but says he will start a new life in the military.
Pfahl says he hopes to be in the military for the next 20 years.
