Chatsworth Council wants public imput before any decision is made on the future of the Williamsford arena.
Mayor Howard Greig says that an engineering reports shows some structural problems with the arena section of the building and its roof may not support any large accumulation of snow.
He says because of those concerns the arena will remain closed until a decision has been made on what to do.
Greig says the reports estimates it would cost about 250 thousand dollars to make the necessary repairs to keep the roof from collapsing under a heavy snow load.
He says a special committee has been set up which includes council members, board of management members and a curling club member to look at the short and long term prospects for the building.
Greig says they hope to have some public meetings in the next month or so dealing with whether or not they should repair the building.
He says the municipality currently has four arenas and with changing population demographics, there simply may not be a need for that many facilities in the near future.
Greig says there is no truth to the rumours that Council is using this report as an excuse to shut down the arena.
He says this is a safety issue, nothing more.
