Earlier this week Beach News told you Titan, the police dog was retiring.
Titan had surgery back in April on a broken leg, and is unable to perform all of the duties required of a police dog on the force.
Speaking on Soundingboard Police Constable Andy Stewart says they need to raise seven thousand dollars for the purchase of another K-9.
So far one major fundraiser has been planned; a dog walk-a-thon on October 18th in Port Elgin.
Stewart says a BBQ will be held, and participants will then be able to choose their walking distance starting at the new Saugeen Shores Dog Park along the rail trail.
Police dog demonstations will be held as well.
Stewart says having a police dog is instrumental to the community.
The K-9 unit is used to search for lost people, people committing crimes and leaving the scene, escaped prisoners, and as a deterrent.
Stewart hopes to acquire a dog and start training as soon as possible.
He hopes the dog can be in action with the police force in the early spring.
John Divinski of 98 the Beach and his dog Ubu are helping out too.
If they raise more than $3,000, John will wear a dress during the 4km walk.
