Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell-Stanners is expressing great disappointment, with the decision by PPG to close the local plant.
170 workers will be out of a job next March, as the American based firm trims production in an uncertain economy.
Lovell-Stanners says the Economic development for Owen Sound, Steve Furness, has been working with the company for the last few years trying to find ways to help PPG re-invest in the furnace rebuilt.
The mayor says those talks proved to be fruitless, as a huge committment was needed from both the company and from the Federal and Provincial governments to make it work.
Mayor Lovell-Stanners says she plans to meet with Plant Manager Tom Kloss and Steve Furness to see what the city can offer in the way of assistance to the PPG workers who will be out of a job.
The mayor says the impact of the shutdown will be felt throughout the community as those workers won’t be buying as many goods, and City Hall will be hit with a loss of property taxes when the plant closes.
