41 year veteran of the plant, Jim Moyer of Shallow Lake tells Bayshore Broadcasting news it was no big surprise to him.
Moyer says the company has been lowering the standard of living for workers over the last few years, and has been in bed with low paying countries like Mexico and Asia.
He says the last contract with PPG resulted in a two-tier pay scale with new workers starting at 11 dollars an hour.
Moyer says that was supposed to save the plant, but obviously it didn’t.
Both Moyer and an anonymous caller from PPG say the mood around the plant today is glum…. with workers continuing to do their jobs but it is very quiet….
At one time, PPG employed nearly 600 workers. That has fallen over the years to around 170 now.
The plant closes in March of next year.
