A milestone for a Southampton Church today.
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is celebrating 157 years and is known as the
oldest congregation in Southampton.
Co-Clerk Mary Sylver says they are celebrating with a special talk from members of a presbytery mission team that helped people affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
Sylver says they are also reflecting on the past, and having a “Hundred Mile Luncheon”.
It consists of locally grown produce within a hundred miles of Southampton, something Sylver says is typical of the days past.
Sylver says as they look to the future, she hopes they will continue with their goal of raising awareness of environmental stewardship.
This summer, they held three “Green Talks” focused on the environment and open to the public.
Sylver admits, numbers are declining these days, and hopes that changes.
The church held its first services in 1851 our of a log home, where the Post Office is currently located; the current church was built in 1877.
