Minister Donna Cansfield, has requested feedback from municipalities on how the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources can promote tourism based on outdoor activities, culture, sport and recreation.
Brockton Councillor Dan Gieruszak says it’s important to understand the role local Conservation Authorities play in promoting tourism.
He believes the Saugeen Conservation Authority has a positive economic impact on the municipality, and there needs to be more study done to find out just what that impact is.
Gieruszak says conservation authorities across the province play a huge role in preserving and protecting our environment, and he believes that directly impacts our tourism and economy.
He says there are so many different economic development groups operating on different levels – community, county, and sub-regional – and it’s important they co-ordinate to make sure activities and human resources are being used as efficiently as possible.
Council unanimously backed the motion, and will provide the MNR with feedback in a couple of weeks.
That information will then be passed on to MPP Greg Sorbara, who is currently heading a task force to revitalize Ontario Tourism.
He’s currently overseeing this Tourism Competitiveness Study.
