President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne personally took Dalton McGuinty and Huron Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell on a tour around the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.
There were also members of the Ontario Liberal Caucus that also toured the facility.
McGuinty in the past was never known as a champion of nuclear technology.
But in talking with the media after the tour, McGuinty seemed to be quite impressed with the facility and is more and more relying on nuclear power to accommodate future electricity needs.
McGuinty says his vision is to include nuclear power as part of a responsible, balanced, and intellegent plan.
He says the refurbishment of Bruce “A” is a massive project and is the single biggest construction project in the country.
He says the Bruce has served us well in the past and will continue to serve Ontarians well into the future.
McGuinty says the issue of the proposed Bruce-to-Milton transmission lines extension must be dealt with by striking the right balance.
He says we must make sure residents can get access to clean, safe, reliable electricity and do it in a way that doesn’t compromise the quality of the environment.
McGuinty says he will compare the cost associated with the refurbishment of Bruce “B” and a new build in Bruce “C” before making any expansion committments.
He says his government will continue to rely on the existing capacity adding they don’t want to reduce the capacity of nuclear generation.
Hawthorne says McGuinty knows that the community wants any future expansion to come to the Bruce site.
He says the community has an appettite and hopefully they were able to show it to McGuinty and the Liberal Caucus.
