Branch President June Pyette says there has been a slowdown in the process that’s completely out of the Legion’s control.
Pyette says there have been personnel changes at the Ministry of Transportation so now the Legion is shooting for November 11th as the designation date.
The original plan was to have the designation approved in time for for Legion Week this month and Pyette admits the changes have been frustrating.
She says the MTO official in Owen Sound she had been working with has been replaced, and he tells her because the provincial government has approved only a few highway designations the process could still take some time.
Pyette says she’s worried a potential change of government in Ottawa might upset designation plans.
Pyette says the Legion is working very hard to secure the desingation by Remembrance Day and that the MTO says they’re doing their best.
In her words, doing their best is “legalese for maybe”.
Branch 109 wants the highway designation in place this year, because November 11th marks the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
