The PLAY in Bruce Grey website — www.playbrucegrey.com — made it’s official launch today at the Saugeen Shores municipal offices.
Chair Shawn Everitt says the website is crucial in making sure that all 17 municipalities, Grey and Bruce Counties, and their partners are well informed about what they are doing and the progress they are making.
Everitt — who is also the Recreation Director for the Town of the Blue Mountains — says the key for PLAY is to have the youth push this thing forward.
He says kids won’t often participate in sports or games when it is organized and structured.
Everitt says other factors include the availability of parks and playgrounds in the area, keeping activities free or inexpensive, and that everybody can take part.
He says when everyone participates it brings families together and brings communities together.
Everitt noted that child obesity in Bruce Grey is higher than the provincial average.
He says some of that can be attributed to not utilizing parks and playgrounds or the lack of unstructured sports and activities in the community.
He says the purpose of the PLAY initiative is to bring communities together to come up with ways of how to get kids more active.
Funding for the website comes from the Ministry of Health Promotion Communities in Action Fund and the member municipalities.
