The Bruce County Junior Farmers are celebrating 60 years as an organization.
But interest in the Junior Farmers continues to dwindle.
Speaking on Sounding Board Member Mary Alexander says there were clubs in Kincardine, Tara, Chesley, Ripley, Port Elgin, and Teeswater.
She says the Ripley club is the only one still running.
She says 40 people are members of that group.
She says there were over 700 members in all of Bruce County back in the 70s.
Alexander says there are not many rural youth living in the area as they are going to school in other areas or playing sports or sitting in front of the computer.
She says it was a lot of fun when she was with the Junior Farmers.
She says they spent time playing sports and learning to become leaders in the community.
Alexander says while some clubs are dormant they still retain the funding for that group and could use it towards resurrecting the clubs.
She says there is interest among young people towards farming.
She says the Tara and Teeswater fall fairs are just a couple of local fall fair still going on and that might spark some interest in the community.
The Bruce County Junior Farmers will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary on September 20th as part of the 2008 International Plowing Match.
