The Green Party is sounding alarm bells over the the listeriosis outbreak calling on Federal Health Minister Tony Clement and Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to review the Canadian Food safety regulations.
Leader Elizabeth May tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the Global food system is rife with dangers and having the Canadian Food Inspection agency responsible for food safety is a conflict of interest.
She says CFIA is responsible as well for promoting Agri-Foods and claims Health Canada should be handling food safety, something it was doing prior to 1996.
A secret federal cabinet document leaked last month suggested the Conservatives intend to hand responsibility for inspections over to the food industry.
May says we are not paying enough attention to food safety in Canada, and the result has become deadly for consumers.
Meanwhile,
Elizabeth May is baffled by Prime Minister Harper’s move to force a Federal election.
She says after the P.M. passed a bill mandating a vote next fall, she can’t believe he is moving to an election mode now.
May disputes Harpers’ claim that the House of Commons is “dysfunctional”, since it hasn’t been sitting since June.
