The Mayor of Brockton is calling for a public inquiry into the ongoing listeriosis outbreak.
Charlie Bagnato says he is shocked and astonished the federal government hasn’t learned the lessons of Walkerton’s tainted water tragedy in 2000.
Seven people died and thousands more fell ill in Walkerton after E. coli was washed into the town’s water supply.
Bagnato notes three current federal Conservative cabinet ministers — Tony Clement, John Baird and Jim Flaherty — were all members of the Ontario cabinet at the time of the Walkerton outbreak.
Bagnato tells Beach News food security and public safety should never be sacrificed in the name of cutting costs.
He feels lack of government oversight led to the Walkerton disaster and this outbreak.
Bagnato says a public inquiry will ensure something like this never happens again.
Health officials have confirmed eight people have died as a result of the ongoing listeriosis outbreak.
It has been linked to tainted meat produced by Maple Leaf Foods.
