It’s a historical honour for a bed and breakfast in Wiarton.
The bed and breakfast is the first private residence to be given a heritage designation in South Bruce Peninsula.
Council approved a by law to endorse the designation at council last week and it’s in the final stages of receiving a full-fledged heritage designation from Ontario Heritage.
Owner of the Gadd-About Danielle Patterson says it’s a great honour especially with her efforts of preserving this important part of Wiarton history.
Patterson says she hopes other people will follow in her footsteps and try to preserve our historical homes in the town.
Patterson’s home is made up of two structures, and was originally built in 1894 as a five room wooden house and then a large Scott faced brick house constructed in 1903.
Patterson says 3 years ago is when she started to look into the designation and began researching the history and past owners of the home.
Patterson says she was lucky when she had an insurance claim and the adjuster told her his grandfather built the house.
Patterson says the key to know when the brick addition was added in 1903 was a brick mason put the date on one of the bricks.
Patterson adds her research not only showed her the many owners of the home but gave her a history lesson into Wiarton and when the population began to grow.
