Georgian Bluffs council is looking into the possibility of implementing new development fees.
CAO Bill White has recommended council look at a tender to conduct a study into implementing the fees.
However, Deputy Mayor Dwight Burley says there has to be a better way to determine what types of fees should be set.
He says it doesn’t make sense for council to spend money, sometimes up to 100 thousand dollars, just to determine whether they’ll do something.
As for the idea of development charges, Burley says they don’t have to look at implementing something just because other municipalities are.
He says he’s not convinced development charges are the right way to go.
Burley has some ideas – he says they should study the what kind of expansion might have to be made to other municipal services – such as the library – and get developers to cover those types of costs.
