On Soundingboard recently this week Guy Lauzon, the parliamentary assistant to the federal agriculture minister is on what he calls the “Young Farmers Tour” and was in the area.
Lauzon says his government is trying to find ways and programs to make the farming industry more economically viable and productive.
He says farmers, like other factions of society, are getting older and it’s difficult to get young people to follow.
Lauzon says they want to zero in on the smaller farms because that’s where the young people will start if they’re interested.
He says the government doesn’t have any ideas yet but they’re open to suggestions of what’s needed.
That’s why he has been assigned the cross-Canada tour–to listen to what people are saying about the industry.
Lauzon will be presenting a report to the agriculture minister in September.
On the election trail, Lauzon says Canadians have told him they don’t want a fall election and feel his government is doing a reasonably good job.
He says the Conservatives can’t get a straight answer from the Liberals as to whether or not they’re going to work in a minority government environment for the country and it’s frustrating.
Unlike an earlier story where we reported the Liberals blaming the Conservatives for a disruptive committee meeting setting, Lauzon says the exact opposite is true.
He says the Liberals are trying to disrupt government work by flying under the radar, by causing problems at the committee level or in back-room deals.
