There are no confirmed cases of listeriosis in Bruce and Grey Counties.
But the Grey Bruce Health Unit wants to make sure everyone is aware of the meat recall and takes precautions.
Medical Officer of Health Doctor Hazel Lynn says they have contacted food service operators at hospitals and long term care facilities in the region.
She says their order is to hold the Maple Leaf deli meats that are under investigation and discard the recalled products.
Doctor Lynn is concerned the meats have been distributed to other locations.
But she says it appears most of the recalled products were distributed to larger urban centres and as close as Wellington and Dufferin Counties.
At least one person in Southern Ontario is dead from listeria — a bacterial infection that can be fatal to the infirm, elderly, and unborn children.
There are 16 other people in Canada who are sick from listeria — twelve of those people live in Ontario.
The Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit is investigating one case of listeria to see if it is tied to the outbreak.
Maple Leaf Foods is expanding a recall to 23 packaged meats because they might contain the bacterial strain.
Health Canada is not making a direct connection between the outbreak and action by Maple Leaf Foods.
Most healthy people will get flu like symptoms from listeriosis.
But for the most vulnerable people — such as the elderly, pregnant women and people with immune deficiencies — it can be fatal.
