A tense morningĀ in Port Elgin for some residents and officials.
It turns out, what was worried to be a gas leak, was only a smell, similiar to that of natural gas coming from materials being cleaned up at the Stevens Hepner building…the old broom factory.
Acting Fire Chief Phil Eagleson tells Bayshore Broadcasting News says calls to the department started coming in around 7:45 in this morning.
The area in question (Hilker and River Streets) was blocked off due to that smell and residents in the immidiate area were evacuated.
Eagleson says some residents had in fact experienced the same smell for the last three days.
Today, he says they reported it as being stronger; mainly due to low winds.
Eagleson says as a precaution, police, fire and ambulance were on scene for a few hours.
Eagleson says residents were allowed back in their homes shortly after 10 this morning when it was determined there was no danger.
Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett says they had to be concerned until they had further details and take precautions; that is why they made the evacuations.
Rivett says Technical Safety Standards association is looking into the matter, to double check they are correct; there is NO gas leak.
