Two Engineering firms are wrapping up a more than year long study into plans to extend the life of the Hanover-Walkerton landfill site by 10-20 years.
Hanover Councillor Peter Hambly tells Bayshore Broadcasting news the landfill committee expects a final report with recommendations on the project within a few weeks.
Hambly says two options are being looked at and once the report is in and council has a chance to review it.. a public meeting will be held in September.
It is costing Hanover-Walkerton 700 thousand dollars for an Environmental Assessment to be conducted on the project.
Councillor Hambly says they still have about 2 years life expectancy left in the landfill before an extension is required.
No new land would be used up by the project, as Hanover-Walkerton simply seek approval to put in more waste than the site originally was approved to hold.
Hambly says an increased emphasis on blue box programs, a ban on e-waste and batteries along with a new fee structure has greatly reduced the amount of garbage going into the landfill site.
