One Saugeen Shores Councillor is upset about a Council’s decision.
Victoria Serda put forward a motion at last night’s Council meeting to form an environmental committee made up of six citizens, two youths, and two members of Council.
However, many on Council questioned whether such a committee should be formed and whether any issues about the environment should be dealt with at the Committee of the Whole.
Council accepted a recommendation by Councillor Luke Charbonneau to refer it to their Striking Committee for further discussion and provide a recommendation to Council.
Serda feels that since the Striking Committee originally didn’t want an environmental committee, the decision by Council effectively ends any hope of putting one together.
But Charbonneau says it would be best to debate the merits of having such a committee to a group designed to handle the matter.
Charbonneau for one supports an environmental committee and says it shows leadership in the community by bringing in people who have the best interests of the Town in mind.
Councillor Jane Barber says having another committee creates overlap and therefore causes inefficiencies and problems.
She says the Town needs committees but not 10 or 11, just a few that are effective.
Serda says committees allow people to think about what should be done in their communities and can only help the Town.
She says it is not fair for Council to limit the involvement of its citizens because of problems that had developed in the past.
