The recent rockslide on the Sea to Sky Highway in British Columbia has a local connection.
The work to rehabilitate the 95 kilometre stretch of highway linking Vancouver and the ski resort at Whistler is being carried out by Miller Paving.
Miller Paving was selected by the province of British Columbia to finance, design, build, and operate the highway in advance of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
President and Owen Sound native Leo MacArthur says it’s currently the largest Public-Private Partnership highway project in the country.
MacArthur says crews had finished work on the area where the rockslide occurred and weren’t in the area.
He says after the slide, crews had to go up the side of the mountain and blast off any other portions of rock that could potentially fall.
MacArthur says they then had to clear the highway of the thousands of tonnes of rock and rehabilitate the damaged road underneath.
MacArthur adds they completed the clean-up 24 hours ahead of schedule and the highway was re-opened on Sunday.
Despite the rockslide, he says the entire project remains on schedule.
MacArthur was born and raised in Owen Sound.
Miller Paving started as a small family owned company in 1917 and has expanded to every province in Canada and in Southeastern United States.
