The chief of the Chippewas of Nawash blames miscommunication for native fishing nets in the water at Colpoy’s Bay.
Ralph Akiwenzie says some fishermen did not receive a reminder notice in time to keep their gill nets out of the water in that area.
But Akiwenzie says every fishermen has now received notice and they are responsible to remove their nets.
The Chief also hopes the Ministry of Natural Resources will return any seized nets to native fishermen.
The Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association complained about illegal fishing nets in the Bay and MNR Conservation Officers seized some of the nets this week.
Akiwenzie says the Civic Holiday weekend may have played a factor in why some fishermen didn’t receive the reminder notice.
Under a 2005 agreement with the MNR, native fishing nets are to be removed from the water from August 1st to September 2nd to accommodate fishing derbies.
