Higher fuel prices again getting the blame for cost increases.
The township of Georgian Bluffs is going to see its contract for recycling pick-up nearly double in the next year.
CAO Bill White says he attributes that more to the fact that Miller Waste Services was giving them a lower rate in their last contract.
But now that it’s time to renew the contract, White says Miller’s price has almost doubled – to account for higher fuel prices, and additional houses within the township.
White does point out that the bid from Waste Management comes in very close to what Miller’s offered.
He adds even though it will be a substantial increase from what they were paying before, he’s happy the two bids are close, because that shows the township is just getting caught up to market now.
White says just because recycling costs are almost doubling, doesn’t mean that all services are increasing that much.
Residents of the Islandview Drive Ratepayers Association expressed concerns that with service costs rising, it would put council over budget.
However, White says he’s very happy with the budget, and believes they’ll be fine.
He adds with the increase of development, they’ll start to see more revenue come in on property taxes in the next year.
