This week, 120 countries around the world are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week.
The Grey-Bruce Community Breastfeeding Network is inviting families to the gazebo at Kelso Beach in Owen Sound tomorrow.
Carrie Griffith, Program Manager of Reproductive Health at the Grey-Bruce Health Unit says there will be many resources to support breastfeeding moms.
Griffith says it’s important for moms to know these supports are there, as breastfeeding doesn’t physically come as easy as some women for others.
She says the Health Unit strongly advocates exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months – which means feeding nothing other than the mother’s milk.
Griffith says the benefits of breastfeeding are vast – it’s been linked with decreasing risk of allergies, stomach illnesses, and certain types of cancer within the mother.
It’s also been linked to better development of the brain and immunities.
Griffith says they’re inviting all mothers to the free event, which runs from 9:30 until 11:30 tomorrow morning.
There are door prizes, and face painting for the kids.
The event wraps up the week-long celebrations that took place around the world starting on August 1st.
