Special reusable bags are NOT available at merchants throughout Saugeen Shores yet.
Chamber of Commerce Community Relations Coordinator Sally Hunt, says the 55 hundred they have ordered are sitting in Vancouver, waiting to clear customs.
Hunt says the bags come from China.
She has been told the delay is due in part to the Olympics; customs officers are being more rigid about items coming from China into the country.
The bags will be available as part of a new environment green bags project and were to arrive in July.
They will be sold, or given away at various locations in the municipality once they do arrive.
Hunt says the average family accumulates about 60 bags within four trips to the grocery store.
She says by offering the bags, they hope to change that, so less waste ends up in the landfill.
One side of the bag is dedicated to Southampton merchants, the other to those in Port Elgin.
The town is a major sponsor in the project.
