Colleen Purdon will be part of a group invited for the UN’s launch of a Decade-Long Initiative to Eliminate Poverty.
Purdon says she is honoured by the invitation.
She is involved with a local group that is working on a report on Women and Rural Poverty.
That group is working with another group from Guelph called Rural Women Making Change.
The Guelph group has been invited for the launch, and they in-turn, invited Purdon.
The UN will be launching its Decade-Long Initiative on October 16th.
Purdon says about 175 people will be visiting to attend the launch.
She says it’s a wonderful opportunity to bring attention to rural poverty issues in communities such as ours.
Purdon says rural poverty has been a hidden and “very” low-key issue.
She says it affects people in our region, and not only developing nations.
